Senescence
Senescence refers to the process of aging. The term is derived from the Latin term “senex” which means “old man”. As cells mature, they stop dividing and regenerating and enter a period of senescence. With tissues and organs undergoing tissue degeneration or “cellular senescence” we’re not able to replace cells that are lost and damaged. The result is that we become vulnerable to disease that may not have afflicted us when younger. Recent scientific findings are raising the possibility that getting rid of senescent cells from the body can delay age-related health conditions such as arthritis, cataracts, muscle loss and skin wrinkling.
